We were entrusted with the task of working on two electric people movers for Balfour Beatty. These vehicles are indispensable in tunneling applications, where safety is always paramount. Our team’s expertise ensures that every aspect of their operation meets the highest standards, making sure that safety truly comes first.

Tunnels present unique challenges, particularly when it comes to maintaining the prescribed turn radius. To guarantee that drivers adhere to these essential limits, we have introduced a sophisticated steering lock system. Fully adjustable, this system allows for easy modification of wheel angles based on application needs and can be activated or deactivated with minimal effort. Built from 304 stainless steel, it ensures resilience and rust-free performance.

The middle seats can be folded down so these people movers can transport equipment down the tunnel. We manufactured removable headboards for each tug to ensure the driver is safe should these loads move under braking. We used 2mm profiled steel plate with an array of holes to allow for visibility, much more robust than the steel mesh alternative. We also added 4x mirrors to each tug to aid in visibility.

When these tugs arrived with us, there were various electrical issues.

• 1 tug would intermittently not power on

• When it did power on, it would not drive from one end

• Brake lights were inoperative

• Forward lights were intermittent

• Side markers were missing

For the team at IHS UK LTD, no problem is insurmountable. We meticulously pursued each issue, addressing and resolving them one by one. Missing items were promptly sourced and fitted, ensuring everything was completed on schedule and to the highest standard.

Since these people movers can be driven from both ends, each is equipped with four seatbelts to ensure passenger safety. However, when they arrived at our facility, we found that every seatbelt was either cracked or inoperative. Our team replaced each one with a like-for-like replacement, ensuring the highest safety standards were restored.
